Theme: Musical instruments and national costumes of Great Britain

England, unlike Wales and Scotland, has no official national dress.

Some people think men in England wear suits and bowler hats, but it is very unusual these days to see anyone wearing a bowler hat.

(The man in the photo was taking part in a birthday parade for one of the Queen's Guard regiments.)

An English National Costume group are trying to make England's national dress be the clothes worn by the Anglo Saxons during the 7th century. The Anglo-Saxons were warrior-farmers and came from north-western Europe. They began to invade Britain during 450 A.D.

A far better choice for an English national dress would be to choose from our many customs and traditions we have in England. There are a wide variety of costumes from the spectacular ceremonies associated with monarchy to the traditional costumes worn by morris dancers and others at English country fairs.

The Pearly Kings were the leaders of the Victorian street sellers. They got their name because they wore 'pearl' buttons on their hats as a sign of a thority. Later they began to wear clothes covered all over in buttons.

The title of Pearly King is passsed down in the family, and there are Pearly Queens, Princes and Princesses too. They now spend their free time collecting for charity.

Royal Guards

Beefeaters and Yeomen of the Guard are very important because they look after our queen and her jewels. Some people say this is the nearest thing to our national costume.

What is the national dress of Scotland?

Man wearing a kilt. In Scotland the national dress is a kilt. The kilt is worn around the waist.

What is the national costume of Wales?

The national costume of Wales is a long skirt, worn with a petticoat and topped with a shawl.

Homework:

Write about the UK national costumes.

Theme: Company structure and management styles

A management style is the particular way managers go about accomplishing these objectives. It encompasses the way they make decisions, how they plan and organize work, and how they exercise authority. Management styles vary by company, level of management, and even from person to person.

The way in which an organization is structured has a great impact on the style of management needed to optimize the organization. A misfit between management styles and the organizational structure will result in a poorly functioning company, even though all other assets for success might be present.

Significance

The significance of good managers might seem  straightforward, but even the best managers may not be able to turn around a department or company. Failure can often be attributed to a style of management that does not fit with the structure of the organization. A strong, directive manager with the best qualifications might be unable to manage an organic, open organization. It is essential that managers understand what style of management fits best with organizational structures.

Types

There are two basic management styles. Centralized management is characterized by managers who set out the strategy, make the decisions and delegate tasks. Employees follow orders. This management style fits best with a simple organizational structure, such as a small business, or a machine bureaucracy like a mass production company.

Decentralized management is characterized by managers who coordinate the output of the tasks of experts within the organization but don't interfere with the content of the work. Managers are highly analytical and focus on the logistical issues and facilitate the experts with good working conditions. This management style fits best with a professional bureaucracy such as a research company, a division structure such as a company operating nationwide or worldwide, or an ad-hocracy like an art house or a fashion designer label.

Considerations

It is important to understand the market in which a company operates to establish its organizational structure and the management style that fits best with the company. There is always the combination between market, organizational structure and management style that has to be optimized. For example, in the market of fast food, it makes no sense to structure a company like a gourmet restaurant. It has to be organized in a way so it can mass produce and meet demand. Analyze the type of business and the type of market the organization is in before organizing the company in a specific structure and management style.

Misconceptions

There is often a misconception about the management style for the company as a whole and the individual skills of a manager. Management skills such as people skills or leadership are individual management skills that managers within either management style may or may not possess. The type of management the company proclaims is either centralized or decentralized. It is therefore important to see the difference between management skills and management style to be able to make the right decision between a centralized or decentralized management style.

Benefits

The benefits of having a good fit between the organizational structure and the style of management is twofold. Companies with the right fit maximize productivity because the management style is able to optimize performance. Companies with the right fit benefit from a happy work force. Employees see managers with good management skills as a bonus, but mostly they will value managers who fit within the management style needed to bring the company to a higher level.

Homework:

1. What innovations can be introduced into the organization of the company structure?

 2. How to properly organize friendly relations in a team and choose the right management style?

 3. What is a management style?  What does the management style include?

 4. How to write the structure of the company?

 5. Describe the 3 main styles of office team management.

Theme: British art as a consequence of the country's socio-cultural development. British folklore: sagas, folk songs, dances.

The folk music of England is a tradition-based music, which has existed since the later medieval period. It is often contrasted with courtly, classical and later commercial music. Folk music is traditionally preserved and passed on orally within communities, but print and subsequently audio recordings have since become the primary means of transmission. The term is used to refer both to English traditional music and music composed or delivered in a traditional style.

It can be seen as having distinct regional and local variations in content and style, particularly in areas more removed from the cultural and political centres of the English state, as in Northumbria, or the West Country. Cultural interchange and processes of migration mean that English folk music, although in many ways distinctive, has significant crossovers with the music of Scotland. When English communities migrated to the United StatesCanada and Australia, they brought their folk traditions with them, and many of the songs were preserved by immigrant communities.

English folk music has produced or contributed to several cultural phenomena, including sea shantiesjigshornpipes and the music for Morris dancing. It has also interacted with other musical traditions, particularly classical and rock music, influencing musical styles and producing musical fusions, such as British folk rockfolk punk and folk metal. There remains a flourishing sub-culture of English folk music, which continues to influence other genres and occasionally gains mainstream attention.

Morris dancing is a form of English folk dance usually accompanied by music. It is based on rhythmic stepping and the execution of choreographed figures by a group of dancers, usually wearing bell pads on their shins. Implements such as sticks, swords and handkerchiefs may also be wielded by the dancers. In a small number of dances for one or two people, steps are near and across a pair of clay tobacco pipes laid one across the other on the floor. They clap their sticks, swords, or handkerchiefs together to match with the dance.

The earliest known and surviving English written mention of Morris dance is dated to 1448 and records the payment of seven shillings to Morris dancers by the Goldsmiths' Company in London. Further mentions of Morris dancing occur in the late 15th century, and there are also early records such as bishops' "Visitation Articles" mentioning sword dancing, guising and other dancing activities, as well as mumming plays.

While the earliest records invariably mention "Morys" in a court setting, and a little later in the Lord Mayors' Processions in London, it had assumed the nature of a folk dance performed in the parishes by the mid 17th century.

There are around 150 Morris jingles (or teams) in the United States. English expatriates form a larger part of the Morris tradition in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Hong Kong. There are isolated groups in other countries, for example those in Utrecht and Helmond, Netherlands; the Arctic Morris Group of Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden; as well as in Cyprus and St. Petersburg, Russia.

The world of Morris is organised and supported by three organisations: Morris Ring, Morris Federation and Open Morris.

Theme: Success stories

How do we define our success?

Building a business and entrepreneurship requires unique talents and a love for your career. It’s not about frivolous things. It’s about opportunity and your ability to uncover your dream.

There are 8 very simple rules that you can follow to become truly successful.

Be Passionate. And do what you for love. If you don’t love it, then why do it? If we build careers or continue in jobs that really aren’t our passion, we’re selling ourselves short. Katherine Hepburn said it best,

“If you have to support yourself, you had bloody well better find some way that is going to be interesting.”

Work Hard. Don’t ever fool yourself—success comes from really hard work. And you might find that although you’re doing all of the heavy lifting, there is satisfaction in a job well done. But remember that you need to rely on others, so make sure that you surround yourself with colleagues that share your same work ethic.

“I do not know anyone who has got to the top without hard work. That is the recipe. It will not always get you to the top, but should get you pretty near.”–Margaret Thatcher.

Be Good. And by that, I mean damn good. Successful people strive for greatness, not mediocrity. So push yourself (and your team) to ensure that you’ve reached your ultimate potential. And be sure to celebrate your wins, that not only breeds confidence among your team, it will keep your colleagues engaged and also will keep your clients or customers enfranchised.

Focus. Focus always proceeds success—which is not possible without a clear emphasis on what matters most. And leaders constantly need to remind themselves of this vital truth. Focus requires the pursuit of a mission and vision.

Push the Limits. Don't constrain yourself to thinking inside of the box and don’t allow fear to get in your way. Today, people expect more than ordinary so you need to be extraordinary to get noticed and build strong relationships with your target market. Whether you sell a product or service, you must deliver the utmost experience.

Serve. Customer service excellence has always been and will always be one of the critical competitive advantages for any business. Meeting your customer’s needs will help you build a very strong and memorable brand. Be responsive, listen, and observe—then you will create value. Learn from mistakes in service.

Create Ideas. In addition to service: ingenuity, authenticity, and forward thinking will ultimately drive your brand. Aspiration is part of the creative process.

You must always continue to innovate, especially in a competitive market space. Push the envelope when it comes to ideation.

Be Persistent. Business development and entrepreneurship should be built out of love—and any great love requires passion and persistence to capture your dream. Although you will experience setbacks and failures, you will also find success and triumph.

“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it,” said Maya Angelou.
